Title: Let's hear it for the music! (reprise)
Post by: Dutch Uncle on September 03, 2015, 05:45:43 PM
Music can be so soothing for me us. In a whole range of emotions. In fact, sometimes I have a tune in my head, and only when I play the song I know why it's in my head.

So, I'd like to start continue a thread in which we can post songs to share, or just to remind ourselves of what it means to us.
Happy, sad, inspiring, soothing, opening the floodgates of grief... Anything goes.

If you want and feel like it, share a bit of your story with us.

It's probably superfluous to mention this, as music is one of the few forms of communication that so directly speaks to/touches our emotions, but here it goes:

***probable triggers***
(Though from the reactions the first thread got I'd say: soothing ones, one way or another  ;) )

I'll kick off this reprise with an instrumental song. An uplifting jazzy one. Might be a bit 'busy' for some folks:

Okay, sorry I couldn't resist!

Anyways!

One of the songs I really love is My Girl's Ex-Boyfriend by: Rilent K

Basically it reminds me of how my ex-boyfriend left me after nine months. Some time later, my childhood crush (who is now my loving boyfriend of three years<3), and I started dating. I'm thankful my ex broke it off because then I wouldn't be with the love of my life.<3

Also, I wrote a song about PTSD & C-PTSD. I plan on finding some music for it and singing it then sharing it with you guys! I will probably put up the lyrics beforehand since I am excited.

I dance to the song  .
I used to be a 'wallflower', too scared to dance and make a fool out of me.
Thank goodness that has passed.

Yay to dancing!

I liked the song you posted  .

I think David Byrne cured me  ;D

Once in a lifetime - Talking Heads
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=o7pVjl4Rrtc

And you may find yourself living in a shutdown shack
And you may find yourself in another part of the world
And you may find yourself behind the wheel of a large automobile
And you may find yourself in a beautiful house, with a beautiful
wife
And you may ask yourself: Well...How did I get here?

Letting the days go by; let the water hold me down
Letting the days go by; water flowing underground
Into the blue again; after the money's gone
Once in a lifetime; water flowing underground.

And you may ask yourself
How do I work this?
And you may ask yourself
Where is that large automobile?
And you may tell yourself
This is not my beautiful house!
And you may tell yourself
This is not my beautiful wife!
Letting the days go by; let the water hold me down
Letting the days go by; water flowing underground
Into the blue again; after the money's gone
Once in a lifetime; water flowing underground.

Same as it ever was...  Same as it ever was...  Same as it ever was...
Same as it ever was...  Same as it ever was...  Same as it ever was...
Same as it ever was...  Same as it ever was...

Water dissolving...and water removing
There is water at the bottom of the ocean
Under the water, carry the water
Remove the water at the bottom of the ocean!
Water dissolving...and water removing

Letting the days go by; let the water hold me down
Letting the days go by; water flowing underground
Into the blue again; into the silent water
Under the rocks and stones; there is water underground
Letting the days go by/let the water hold me down
Letting the days go by/water flowing underground
Into the blue again/after the money's gone
Once in a lifetime water flowing underground.

And you may ask yourself
What is that beautiful house?
And you may ask yourself
Where does that highway go to?
And you may ask yourself
Am I right?...Am I wrong?
And you may say to yourself
MY GOD!...WHAT HAVE I DONE?

Letting the days go by/let the water hold me down
Letting the days go by/water flowing underground
Into the blue again/into the silent water
Under the rocks and stones/there is water underground
Letting the days go by, let the water hold me down
Letting the days go by, water flowing underground
Into the blue again/after the money's gone
Once in a lifetime/water flowing underground

Same as it ever was...Same as it ever was...Same as it ever was...
Look at where my hand was
time isn't holding us, time isn't after us
Same as it ever was...Same as it ever was...Same as it ever was...
Same as it ever was...Same as it ever was...Same as it ever was...
Same as it ever was...Same as it ever was...

I was actually searching for a clip of a another movie about/full of music, but this will do just fine:

Blues Brothers - Everybody Needs Somebody (to Love)

Lyrics are included if you switch on the 'subtitles'.

Thank you all for the love that is being spread around this place     :cheer:       :yahoo:

Wow, those both take me back Dutch Uncle.

The Blues Brothers... great soundtrack and R.I.P John Belushi.  I still miss him and one of my favorite movies.

Once in a Lifetime is one of my favorite tunes  :woohoo:.... I would put it in my top 20 of most influential songs ever.  It is an iconic song for the 80's generation.   Your taste in music is so eclectic, I love that.

Without music, life would lose all meaning for me...  it is important to humanity in my opinion and everyone's general well-being.

Thank you DU for starting this thread, it is definitely my favorite here at OOTS! :yourock:

Hugs & Kisses, MaryAnn

P.S. Keep the tunes comin'.   :band:

I am extremely hypervigilant this evening and can't go to sleep after reading Shattered and LadyFinn's story's.  I have so much running through my head right now.  I am struggling to make a decision about what I want, who I want to be, and try to break free of the of the hold my husband has on me.  I am a fool for him and no matter what he does (or doesn't do), I am hopelessly in love with him even though I know the only person he really loves is himself.

I want to so desperately to believe he can change like he says he can and that I will have the soul mate that I always dreamed of.  The Cranberries came to mind, I love her voice.  Linger is one of my favorites.  I do take my vows very seriously and believe in "for better, or worse, richer or poorer" and believe I should stay true to the one I committed too.  But, when is enough enough?  When do you finally hit a point where you can decide to leave him and live with yourself, not feel terrible in the inside and guilty for leaving him alone?  He does have me wrapped around his finger and he is very aware of it.  He tells me that all of the time.  He knows I can't resist his All American boy looks, his cute dimples, and his smile no matter what else he does or says to me.  I am a fool and I punish myself everyday as a result. :'(  I have included the lyrics and a link to the video below)

P.S.  Linger in my situation refers to his obsession with porn.  I have at times suspected he was cheating or at least crosses a line.  He has a lot of friends that are women and talks to them like you would think he was talking with a wife.  He will from time to time try to sweet talk me with some of his favorite pet names but he never calls me Precious or Hey, beautiful.  I am his financial support and like a security blanket for him.  I have tried to talk to him about it but he will not let me in and just keeps telling me what I want to hear so I will not leave. He knows I have much more too lose if I do.  If he loved me in the way 2 people should he would be honest with me and willing to set me free so I can find true happiness and end the suffering waiting for a type of love that he will never be able to give.

Linger - The Cranberries

If you, if you could return
Don't let it burn
Don't let it fade
I'm sure I'm not being rude
But it's just your attitude
It's tearing me apart
It's ruining every day
For me
I swore I would be true
And honey, so did you
So why were you holding her hand?
Is that the way we stand?
Were you lying all the time?
Was it just a game to you?
But I'm in so deep
You know I'm such a fool for you
You've got me wrapped around your finger
Do you have to let it linger?
Do you have to, do you have to, do have to let it linger?

Oh, I thought the world of you
I thought nothing could go wrong
But I was wrong, I was wrong
If you, if you could get by
Trying not to lie
Things wouldn't be so confused
And I wouldn't feel so used
But you always really knew
I just want to be with you
And I'm in so deep
You know I'm such a fool for you
You've got me wrapped around your finger
Do you have to let it linger?
Do you have to, do you have to, do have to let it linger?

And I'm in so deep
You know I'm such a fool for you
You've got me wrapped around your finger
Do you have to let it linger?
Do you have to, do you have to, do have to let it linger?

You know I'm such a fool for you
You've got me wrapped around your finger
Do you have to let it linger?
Do you have to, do you have to, do have to let it linger?

Sometimes it just hits me...
This song comes along on my stereo. Never paid too much attention to it, it's from a compilation album called "Sleeping Beauties".

And suddenly I relate strong to this one...

Clay Pidgeons - Blaze Foley
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=kspfKqdxcXM

I'm goin' down to the Greyhound Station gonna get a ticket to ride
Gonna find that lady with two or three kids and sit down by her side
Ride 'til the sun comes up and down around me 'bout two or three times
Smokin' cigarettes in the last seat
Tryin' to hide my sorrow from the people I meet and get along with it all

Go down where the people say "y'all"
Sing a song with a friend, change the shape that I'm in
And get back in the game and start playin' again

I'd like to stay but I might have to go to start over again
Might go back down to Texas, might go to somewhere that I've never been
And get up in the mornin' and go out at night
And I won't have to go home, get used to bein' alone
Change the words to this song, start singin' again

I'm tired of runnin' 'round lookin' for answers to questions that I already know
It could build me a castle of memories just to have somewhere to go

Count the days and the nights that it takes to get back in the saddle again
Feed the pigeons some clay, turn the night into day
Start talkin' again, when I know what to say

I'm goin' down to the Greyhound Station, gonna get a ticket to ride
Gonna find that lady with two or three kids and sit down by her side
Ride 'til the sun comes up and down around me 'bout two or three times
Smokin' cigarettes in the last seat
Tryin' to hide my sorrow from the people I meet and get along with it all

Go down where the people say "y'all"
Feed the pigeons some clay, turn the night into day
Start talkin' again when I know what to say

Thanks for sharing Dutch I like this song by Blaze Foley. I love the guitar picking. It's so pretty.

I'm also astonished by David Byrne's live performance. I found myself like, a bit in Awe at him. Thanks for sharing his profound work. God he's so weird and awesome.

Widdiful, I love the Kiesza song. Such a cool video. I love that style of dance. Ah makes me want to get into a dance class. And agreed...Such an amazing voice.

Good stuff always on this thread. Thanks for sharing

I wish I knew how (it would feel to be free) - Nina Simone

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-sEP0-8VAow

To actually post the 'official' lyrics to this song would be detrimental to the song itself.
This is clearly not a composition, but a performance and experience in one.

There's a biopic (?) of her hitting the cinema's soon (or perhaps even now, depending on the release date in your country) and I'm destined to see it.

Boy, do I wish I had seen her perform. Must have been like Ray Charles, who I actually did see.
Etched in my being.
Yay!

Every time I hear about the "inner child" i hear this song float in:

WILD CHILD

Ever close your eyes
ever stop and listen
ever feel alive
and you've nothing missing
you don't need a reason
let the day go on and on

Let the rain fall down
everywhere around you
give into it now
let the day surround you
you don't need a reason
let the rain go on and on

What a day
what a day to take to
what a way
what a way
to make it through
what a day
what a day to make you
a wild child

Only take the time
from the helter skelter
every day you find
everything's in kilter
you don't need a reason
let the day go on and on

Every summer sun
every winter evening
every spring to come
every autumn leaving
you don't need a reason
let it all go on and on

Unchained. It reminds me of an epiphany I had a few years ago. I do not have to set one more foot down this path others have laid out for me. And in that moment, I was not chained by my race, my class, my gender, or the judgement of others. I was free to be whoever I wanted to be.

It reminds me of the feeling of being a child. Looking out at the world for the first time, and seeing everything, but not judging it. Accepting, and learning, and incorporating every new bit of information without hesitation.

t's not music, but here is a dream meditation that takes you into that state of acceptance:

http://www.chopra.com/dream-meditation

And, because I respect this forum, and don't want to derail the thread, here is a song that makes me feel the same way yours does. The feeling of longing to be free. There aren't any words, but I think you'll understand. Debussy, in the style of French composers from his time, dictated precisely what to play, and how to play it. So, unlike most classical music, which is played with the expression of the performer, Debussy's work is always played with the same expression he felt when composing it:

https://youtu.be/YEyKM13yf_4

There is a story that goes along with it, if you want to find it. I don't think I'd do it justice in retelling.

Woodsgnome, your song describes perfectly what I think we all feel sometimes. Sometimes, it's like there's a wild child in control, scared, and doing everything it can to survive. I'm glad you've been able to connect with your inner child so well, to be able to hear it like that. Good for you!  Keep listening!

I have 3 song I'm feeling simultaneously right now.

Right Here By Staind

I know I've been mistaken
But just give me a break
And see the changes that I've made
I've got some imperfections
But how can you collect them all
And throw them in my face

[Chorus]
But you always find a way
To keep me right here waiting
You always find the words to say
To keep me right here waiting
If you chose to walk away
I'd still be right here waiting
Searching for the things to say
To keep you right here waiting

I hope you're not intending
To be so condescending
It's as much as I can take
And you're so independent
You just refuse to bend
So I keep bending 'till I break

[Chorus]

I've made a commitment
I'm willing to bleed for you
I needed fulfillment
I found what I need in you
Can't you just forgive me
I don't want to relive all the mistakes
I've made along the way

But I always find a way
To keep you right here waiting
I always find the words to say
To keep you right here waiting

[Chorus]

So Far Away By Staind

This is my life, it's not what it was before
All these feelings I've shared
And these are my dreams
That I'd never lived before
Somebody shake me
'Cause I, I must be sleeping,

Now that we're here, so far away
All the struggle we thought was in vain
An' all the mistakes one life contained
They all finally start to go away

An' now that we're here, it's so far away
An' I feel like I can face the day
An' I can't forget that I'm not ashamed
To be the person that I am today

These are my words
That I've never said before
I think I'm doin' okay
And this is the smile
I've never shown before
Somebody shake me
'Cause I, I must be sleeping

An' now that we're here, it's so far away
All the struggle we thought was in vain
An' all the mistakes one life contained
They all finally start to go away

An' now that we're here, it's so far away
An' I feel like I can face the day
An' I can't forget that I'm not ashamed
To be the person that I am today

I'm so afraid of waking
Please don't shake me
Afraid of waking
Please don't shake me

Now that we're here, it's so far away
All the struggle we thought was in vain
An' all the mistakes one life contained
They all finally start to go away

An' now that we're here, it's so far away
An' I feel like I can face the day
An' I can't forget that I'm not ashamed
To be the person that I am today

and finally

Go Your Own Way By Fleetwood Mac

Loving you
Isn't the right thing to do
How can I ever change things
That I feel

If I could
Maybe I'd give you my world
How can I
When you won't take it from me

You can go your own way
Go your own way
You can call it
Another lonely day
You can go your own way
Go your own way

Tell me why
Everything turned around
Packing up
Shacking up is all you want to do

If I could
Baby I'd give you my world
Open up
Everything's waiting for you

You can go your own way
Go your own way
You can call it
Another lonely day
You can go your own way
Go your own way

The Fleetwood Mac one is awesome, I'll look up the others.

I remember well from my childhood how my brother and sister loved that song, and it was a hit. The clip with Stevie Nicks and her "witch"-hat/outfit, lol. I think my sis became a hippie (for a while) because of her example. Amazed I was by such a performance, a whole world opened up. A sort of real life fairy-tale. (I was a kid of 10-12, fully in all the magic stuff still). Nice memories to "the Wonder Years".

Reading the lyrics now, I can see it has a sadder connotation for you now though. I hope and wish the music can bring you comfort and indeed let your ex "go her own way".

Take care.

And two more

Landslide Stevie Nicks

I took my love, I took it down
Climbed a mountain and I turned around
And I saw my reflection in the snow covered hills
'Til the landslide brought it down
Oh, mirror in the sky
What is love?
Can the child within my heart rise above?
Can I sail through the changin' ocean tides?
Can I handle the seasons of my life?
?

Well, I've been afraid of changin'
'Cause I've built my life around you
But time makes you bolder
Even children get older
And I'm getting older too
And I'm getting older too
Oh, take my love, take it down
Climb a mountain and turn around

And if you see my reflection in the snow covered hills
Well the landslide will bring it down
And if you see my reflection in the snow covered hills
Well the landslide will bring it down
The landslide will bring it down

that makes me teary just reading the damn lyrics

Jar of Hearts Christina Perri

I know I can't take one more step towards you
'Cause all that's waiting is regret
Don't you know I'm not your ghost anymore
You lost the love I loved the most

I learned to live, half alive
And now you want me one more time

[Chorus]
Who do you think you are?
Runnin' 'round leaving scars
Collecting your jar of hearts
And tearing love apart
You're gonna catch a cold
From the ice inside your soul
So don't come back for me
Who do you think you are?

I hear you're asking all around
If I am anywhere to be found
But I have grown too strong
To ever fall back in your arms

I've learned to live, half alive
And now you want me one more time

[Chorus]

It took so long just to feel alright
Remember how to put back the light in my eyes
I wish I had missed the first time that we kissed
'Cause you broke all your promises
And now you're back
You don't get to get me back

Who do you think you are?
Runnin' 'round leaving scars
Collecting your jar of hearts
And tearing love apart
You're gonna catch a cold
From the ice inside your soul
Don't come back for me
Don't come back at all

Who do you think you are?
Runnin' 'round leaving scars
Collecting your jar of hearts
Tearing love apart
You're gonna catch a cold
From the ice inside your soul
Don't come back for me
Don't come back at all

Who do you think you are?
Who do you think you are?
Who do you think you are?

I think that song does now especially, but really has always symbolized my relationship with my ex, I actually broke down and cry....at work, in front of everyone, the first time I heard it. Now more then ever I understand the refrain it did take forever to feel alright, really not quite there yet, the light is slowly coming back to my eyes, and I do wish I had missed our first kiss exactly for the reason stated. But its like she knows exactly when to start begging to come back, she knows when Ive finally started to move on....why the * cant she just leave me alone? Its crazy I love her, but I think about last summer and I just cant move past it, I hate her for it. Mainly because I lost 6 months based on a lie, she promised she had changed and wouldn't run off or run me out this summer.

This one addresses my sis and mom.

She drives me crazy - Fine Young Cannibals
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=J2hxOEmXPrw

Lyrics in the video. Bonus: you can learn Spanish at the same time (though I wouldn't bother  ;D )

Fun fact: I actually thought this was a 'tender' love song, but it's not! LOL. So the [disclaimer] I wanted to give is obsolete.
Fun fact two: my first 'real' GF (apart from the calf-loves (kalverliefde) as they are called here) loved this song, even (or particularly?) after she decided it was a good idea to prostitute herself for... well for whatever she did it for, I never got a grip on that one, and after half a year more or so I called it quits.
It was a 'hit' at the time, so I don't know what attracted her to the song. Well, the looks of the guy for one. He starred in a rather good gay-centered-movie. (a cinema worthy one  ;) ) about a launderette ("My beautiful launderette" from the top of my hat. Anyway, I digress...)
She probably had a better idea what this song was about than me at the time! Ignorant adolescent as I was.
Though I did call her crazy, more than once.  ;)

In any case: let's dance!  :yahoo: "She drives me crazy... Oohoohoo-oo..."

Now here's a Golden Oldie, that I find myself viewing (hearing) in a whole new light/tune today.

I'm sure the gals can relate too, especially the last few lines. (after the :pissed: tried to take credit of "Sue's" achievements against every and all better odds:

I was listening to some Zappa, but then I associated to Steely Dan's "(I'm a fool to do your) Dirty Work".
(Don't ask why! I don't know!  ;D )

So without further ado here is a version of Steely Dan's song featuring the beautiful (and somewhat disturbing) artwork of "Banksy" in the video.
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=l5A2JE-yYPY

Lyrics:
Times are hard
You're afraid to pay the fee
So you find yourself somebody
Who can do the job for free

When you need a bit of lovin'
'Cause your man is out of town
That's the time you get me runnin'
And you know I'll be around

I'm a fool to do your dirty work
Oh yeah
I don't wanna do your dirty work
No more
I'm a fool to do your dirty work
Oh yeah

Light the candle
Put the lock upon the door
You have sent the maid home early
Like a thousand times before
Like the castle in its corner
In a medieval game
I foresee terrible trouble
And I stay here just the same
["Well, not anymore!", says Dutch Uncle  ;) ]

I'm a fool to do your dirty work
Oh yeah
I don't wanna do your dirty work
No more
I'm a fool to do your dirty work
Oh yeah

One song I've really been fixating on lately is one from a disc I found recently that I hadn't listened to in years. I believe it tells perfectly my relationship and ending there of with my ex.

BLIND
By: Lifehouse

I was young but I wasn't naive
I watched helpless
As you turned around to leave
And still I have the pain I have to carry
A past so deep
That even you could not bury if you tried

After all this time
I never thought we'd be here
Never thought we'd be here
When my love for you is blind
But I couldn't make you see it
Couldn't make you see it
That I loved you more than you'll ever know
When part of me died when I let you go

Well, I would fall asleep
Only in hopes of dreaming
That everything would be like it was before
But nights like this
It seems are slowly fleeting
They disappear as reality is crashing to the floor

After all this time
I never thought we'd be here
Never thought we'd be here
When my love for you is blind
But I couldn't make you see it
Couldn't make you see it
That I loved you more than you'll ever know
When part of me died when I let you go

After all this why
Would you ever wanna leave it
Maybe you could not believe it
That my love for you is blind
But I couldn't make you see it
Couldn't make you see it
That I loved you more than you'll ever know
When part of me died when I let you go

That I loved you more than you'll ever know
When part of me died when I let you go

And now for something completely different:

An interesting article on 'ear worms': those pieces of music you can't get out of your head. You know, the horrible tacky pop-songs you can't stand, but are so well made you can't resist humming along  ;D . For days at end.  ;D

http://www.wsj.com/articles/why-you-cant-get-that-song-our-of-your-head-1445886681

I post this as well as I think some of what's discussed here, actually may have a bearing on some of the obsessive thoughts we (well: I for one, for sure) keep getting in our heads, no matter how hard we try to 'recover'. Some of the tips given here might also be of value regarding our "cPTSD-thoughts."

This post is not complete with an "Earworm":
Call Me Maybe, by Carly Rae Jepsen
***trigger warning for the video: this is the (in)famous 'Chatroulette' version, with a cross-dressing guy in bikini. Some might consider it sexual innuendo.***
Pretty innocent to me though. But you might get an "Eyeworm" from this as well.  ;)
Enjoy.  ;D  It's definitely a happy vid.

Inspired/triggered by the "what are your recovery goals"-thread this gem of long past popped up (a song I loved as soon as I first heard it, 20 odd years ago):

Back Porch - The Presidents of the USA
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_oIxEgRYVLc
(Gotta love the fact they play on a three string guitar and a two string bass. How's that for "making do with what you've been handed out"?  )

Happy with no teeth
Happy here in hibernation
Slurpin' on a peach
Starin' at the situation
Kitty at my foot
Meowin' out a conversation
Rockin' back and forth
That's my only destination

[Chorus:]
Old man on the back porch
Old man on the back porch
Old man on the back porch
And that old man is me!
Old man on the back porch
Old man on the back porch
Old man on the back porch
And that...

Got a two string on my lap
Total subsonic vacation
Got chicken on the drums,
Poundin' out a perfect prescription
Got twenty little worms
I'll plug in some amplification
Got fifteen hundred base drum - lugging bug-eyed monkeys
All arriving at the station

[Chorus]

I'm sitting on the back porch, kickin' my legs back,
rockin' in my rocking chair, and sittin' there
On the little back porch is about to fall apart
So I think I might repair it
Just as I'm thinkin' about repairin' it,
Some little friends come along

with some two-string, one-string, no-string guitars
And they all plug em all in to the back porch
And they sit around playin' all their favorite songs
They's kickin' back feelin' real good,
real fine, real full of the wine
And everything's fine, everything's beautiful,
everything's great, I just feel so good
You know I'm seventy years old
and I'm slurpin' everything through a straw

But I'm an...

[Chorus]

Golden Oldie (for me at least: heard it first while in high-school, 30 odd years back) (The song is quite a bit older than that)

Something for Nothing - Rush

Waiting for the winds of change
To sweep the clouds away
Waiting for the rainbow's end
To cast its gold your way
Countless ways
You pass the days

Waiting for someone to call
And turn your world around
Looking for an answer
To the question you have found
Looking for
An open door

You don't get something for nothing
You can't have freedom for free
You won't get wise
With the sleep still in your eyes
No matter what your dreams might be

What you own is your own kingdom
What you do is your own glory
What you love is your own power
What you live is your own story
In your head is the answer
Let it guide you along
Let your heart be the anchor
And the beat of your own song

You don't get something for nothing
You can't have freedom for free
You won't get wise
With the sleep still in your eyes
No matter what your dreams might be

I learned of this song 20-odd-years ago. Hot of the press at the time.
Through a girlfriend of my then girlfriend.
Saw the band in concert, the four of us.
GF turned out to be a disaster. (for me at least  ;D )
I only added the album a few years back to my collection. Too many nasty memories I guess. To the GF.
Loved the song, and the album.
My love of the music won out over my resentment (?) to the breakup with GF in the end.

So with no further ado: Great song by a female rocker 'settling the score' with 'mom'. (I suppose)

Mother, Mother - Tracy Bonham
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=2Xi8NvSetZc

Mother mother, how's the family?
I'm just calling to say hello
How's the weather, how's my father?
Am I lonely? Heavens no...
Mother mother, are you listening?
Just a phone call to ease your mind
Life is perfect, never better, distance making the heart grow blind

When you sent me off to see the world,
Were you scared that I might get hurt
Would I try a little tobacco?
Would I keep on hiking up my skirt?

I'm hungry, I'm dirty, I'm losing my mind
Everything's fine
I'm freezing, I'm starving, I'm bleeding to death
Everything's fine

Yeah, I'm working, making money
I'm just starting to build a name
I can feel it around the corner,
I could make it any day
Mother mother can you hear me,
Sure I'm sober, sure I'm sane
Life is perfect never better
Still your daughter, still the same

If I tell you what you want to hear
Will it help you to sleep well at night
Are you sure that I'm your perfect dear?
Now just cuddle up and sleep tight

I'm hungry, I'm dirty, I'm losing my mind
Everything's fine
I'm freezing, I'm starving, I'm bleeding to death
Everything's fine

I miss you
I love you.

(I have a hunch the last two lines are sarcastic in nature. Could be wrong though.)

The Ploy...

You Know What I Mean - Phil Collins
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=lltT85Wz5R8

Just as I thought I'd make it
You walk back into my life
Just like you never left

Just as I'd learned to be lonely
You call up to tell me
You're not sure if you're ready
But ready or not, you'll take what you've got and leave

Leave me alone with my heart
I'm putting the pieces back together again
Just leave, leave me alone with my dreams
I can do without you, know what I mean...

I wish I could write a love song,
To show you the way I feel
Seems you don't like to listen
Oh but like it or not, take what you've got and leave

Leave me alone with my heart
It's broken in two and I'm not thinking too straight
Just leave, leave me alone with my dreams
You've taken everything else, you know what I mean

This song of Frank Zappa has been with me all from the 'ripe' age of 16-17.

I love the music (nowadays even more than then) and the lyrics. It always seemed to me to have profound depth. As I have been delving into codependency and its role in intra-human relationships, I have come to view the lyrics as describing codependency quite well: "Saving the world...". My 'rescuer' trait. (And that of many others, particularly my FOO. Everybody in my FOO (including me) have (had) this huge desire to be the rescuer of... well, whatever... it doesn't really matter, to a large degree, as long as somebody or something is there to 'rescue'.) Well, it's high time I ditch that trait.
Which is not to say I couldn't be of 'aid' now and then, here and there. Nor does it mean I shouldn't, ever.
But to be the 'lifeguard' of anybody but me? Nah.

So here is: Son of Orange County - Frank Zappa
(a.k.a. The Codependency Song ;) ) (bonus track: More Trouble Every Day)

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Aa1JR-TgPfU

And in your dreams
You can see yourself
As a prophet
Saving the world
The words from you lips
(I am not a crook) [In this live-version Zappa says something different]
I just can't believe you are such
A fool

I just can't believe
You are such a fool
I just can't believe
You are such a fool

I just can't believe
You are such a fool
I just can't believe
You are such a fool

Hahaha... haha...
[instrumental]

More Trouble Every Day
Well I'm about to get sick
From watchin' my TV
Been checkin' out the news
Till my eyeballs fail to see
I mean to say that every day
Is just another rotten mess
(Sure 'nuff!)
And when it's gonna change, my friend
Is anybody's guess (Well!) (Woa!)
So I'm
Watchin' and I'm a-waitin'
I'm hopin' for the best
Even think I'll go to prayin'
Every time I hear 'em sayin'
There's no way to delay
That trouble comin' every day
There's no way to delay
That trouble comin' every day

Wednesday I watched the riot
I seen the cops out on the street
I watched 'em throwin' rocks & stuff & chokin'
In the heat
I listen to reports
'Bout the whisky passin' around
I seen the smoke & fire
And the market burnin' down
I watched while everybody
On his street would take a turn
To stomp & smash & bash & crash & slash & bust & burn
I'm a-watchin' and I'm a-waitin'
But I'm hopin' for the best
Even think I'll go to prayin'
Every time I hear 'em sayin'
There's no way to delay
That trouble comin' every day
There's no way to delay
That trouble comin' every day

Watchin' and I'm a-waitin'
I'm hopin' for the best
Even think I'll go to prayin'
Every time I hear 'em sayin', oh, yeah . . .

A song I listened to a lot when I lived abroad for a year, my first full year totally detached from my FOO.
Met some great people there, and related mostly with many other ex-pats. Due to a language barrier: Arabic. Went to school though: "Arabic or ex-pats", which was fun. One hour every day.
Though I suspect (now) the ex-pats I befriended had more in common with me than I realized then. What "kind of" single person decides to "run of" to a completely alien culture where they know nobody? Granted, a couple of them had arabic roots, but still they were there all by themselves. I guess the ones who travel to (extended) family won't turn up in "Arabic for foreigners" classes...
One of them, a Canadian guy (Hi Mr. Olive  , in case you read this. (not his real name, but he'll know what I mean)) had this "brand new" album on tape, and we played it frequently when touring around on our days off work.

Listening to the song now, I think Miss(es) Morisette has had her own 'pile of dung' stacked up against her at some point in her life...
All I Really Want - Alanis Morissette
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=MPqGOtgvHrk

Do I stress you out
My sweater is on backwards and inside out
And you say how appropriate
I don't want to dissect everything today
I don't mean to pick you apart you see
But I can't help it
There I go jumping before the gunshot has gone off
Slap me with a splintered ruler
And it would knock me to the floor if I wasn't there already
If only I could hunt the hunter

And all I really want is some patience
A way to calm the angry voice
And all I really want is deliverance
Do I wear you out
You must wonder why I'm so relentless and all strung out
I'm consumed by the chill of solitary
I'm like Estella
I like to reel it in and then spit it out
I'm frustrated by your apathy
And I am frightened by the corrupted ways of this land
If only I could meet the Maker

And I am fascinated by the spiritual man
I am humbled by his humble nature
What I wouldn't give to find a soulmate
Someone else to catch this drift
And what I wouldn't give to meet a kindred
Enough about me, let's talk about you for a minute
Enough about you, let's talk about life for a while
The conflicts, the craziness and the sound of pretenses
Falling all around...all around
Why are you so petrified of silence
Here can you handle this?

Did you think about your bills, your ex, your deadlines
Or when you think you're gonna die
Or did you long for the next distraction
And all I need know is intellectual intercourse
A soul to dig the hole much deeper
And I have no concept of time other than it is flying
If only I could kill the killer

All I really want is some peace man
a place to find a common ground
And all I really want is a wavelength
All I really want is some comfort
A way to get my hands untied
And all I really want is some justice...

Well, the 'tape' of Alanis has brought back plenty of memories (even though I bought the CD afterwards and it's now a 'music file' on my PC. Boy, how times fly and things change. I bet some posters here don't even know (from experience) what a cassette-tape is.  ;D For those: it sucks, but it was the best thing to have at some point in time  ;) )

You Learn - Alanis Morissette

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=q_zEudwZfNQ
(lyrics in the video as well)

I recommend getting your heart trampled on to anyone
I recommend walking around naked in your living room
Swallow it down (what a jagged little pill)
It feels so good (swimming in your stomach)
Wait until the dust settles

You live you learn
You love you learn
You cry you learn
You lose you learn
You bleed you learn
You scream you learn

I recommend biting off more then you can chew to anyone
I certainly do
I recommend sticking your foot in your mouth at any time
Feel free
Throw it down (the caution blocks you from the wind)
Hold it up (to the rays)
You wait and see when the smoke clears

You live you learn
You love you learn
You cry you learn
You lose you learn
You bleed you learn
You scream you learn

Wear it out (the way a three-year-old would do)
Melt it down (you're gonna have to eventually anyway)
The fire trucks are coming up around the bend

You live you learn
You love you learn
You cry you learn
You lose you learn
You bleed you learn
You scream you learn

You grieve you learn
You choke you learn
You laugh you learn
You choose you learn
You pray you learn
You ask you learn
You live you learn

In an interesting twist of fate (some people call this "Synchronicity" I believe) I read today's newspaper with this piece on Alanis Morissette:
http://www.theguardian.com/music/2015/nov/11/isnt-it-ironic-alanis-morissette-vaping-uber-netflix-new-version-song
exerpt:
QuoteIn an interview with the Guardian she revealed mixed feelings about that time of her life: "Fame became a great tool. But I still have PTSD from the Jagged Little Pill era. It was a profound violation.

"It felt like every millisecond I was attempting to set a boundary and say no and people were breaking into my hotel rooms and going through my suitcase and pulling my hair and jumping on my car."

You go Girl!

(If I'm right about the origins of the songs on that album (as I surmised in the first post on 'her') she probably has cPTSD with all the added abuse she suffered because of the success.
Perhaps we should invite her over  ;D )

I never felt love from my mother...something I probably share with many on this site. Never stopped me from dreaming, though, wondering what it might have been like. So that's what this song represents; just a part of that dream.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=CHGgWOSTyDs

Backward, turn backward, Time in your flight
Make me a child again, just for tonight
Mother, come back from the echoless shore
Take me again to your heart like before

Kiss from my forehead the furrows of care
Smooth the few silver threads out of my hair
Over my slumber your loving watch keep,
Rock me to sleep, mother, rock me to sleep

Backward, flow backward, tide of the years
I am so weary of toil and of tears
Toil without recompense, tears all in vain,
Take them and give me my childhood again;

For I have grown weary of dust and decay,
Weary of flinging my soul wealth away,
Weary of sowing for others to reap,
Rock me to sleep, mother, rock me to sleep

Bridge:
Mother, oh mother, my heart calls for you
Tired of the hollow, the base, the untrue
Manys a summer the grass has grown green
Blossomed and faded, our faces between

Backward, oh backward, Time in your flight
Make me a child again, just for tonight.
Come from the silence so long and so deep,
Rock me to sleep, mother, rock me to sleep
Rock me to sleep

I've long known I don't love my mother either. I have an inclination for/towards her, is the best fitting English translation I can find for the word I have used to describe what I do feel for her, to a dear friend.

"Not While I'm Around" - JAMIE CULLUM

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=5CWexVsa2ok

Nothing's gonna harm you, not while I'm around.
No one's gonna hurt you, not while I'm around.

Demons are prowling everywhere, nowadays,
I'll send 'em howling,
I got ways.

No one's gonna hurt you,
No one's gonna dare.
Others can desert you,
Not to worry,
whistle, I'll be there.

Demons'll charm you with a smile, for a while,
But in time...
Nothing can harm you
Not while I'm around...

...

Demons'll charm you with a smile, for a while
But in time...
Nothing can harm you
Not while I'm around...

Ball and Chain (chorus)

Take it away
Take it away
Take away this ball and chain
Cause I'm Lonely and I'm tired
and I cant take anymore pain
So take it away
Take it away
Never to return again
Take it away
Take it away

And we have a winner!  :cheer:

But as I listened to the song, I realized multiple 'right' answers an be given.  ;D

I beg anyones indulgence (?) if prizes may be handed out consecutively.  ;)

What a beautiful song:
Quote"When I was younger, so much younger than today
I never needed anybody's help in any way
But now these days are gone, I'm not so self assured
Now I find I've changed my mind and opened up the doors."

Imagine in 40-50 years people will say the same thing when hearing a song by Justin Bieber.  ;D

We are the blessed ones, arpy1!
(although I must confess the Beatles are a tad before my time. They had disbanded (pun intended) before I was even born. Well save for the "rooftop concert", that is.)

Sharing (live) - by Bugge Wesseltoft
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Tyy6e9h8I_U

Once upon a time there used to be another way of living
Once upon a time there used to be another way of thinking
Once upon a time there used to be another way of sharing
there used to be another way of sharing things

Somewhere there is another way of thinking
Somewhere there is another way of living
Somewhere there is another way of sharing things
there is another way of sharing things

Some day there will be another way of living
Some day there will be another way of thinking
Some day there got to be another way of sharing things
there got to be another way of sharing things

Sharing
of sharing
of sharing
of sharing

There got to be another way of sharing things

A song that so aptly describes the 'battles within' I fight now and then.

To me this is quite a romantic song, though perhaps the music will not sound romantic to many.
Well, the end of the song [part V] probably will.  ;)

It's long song, a full side of an LP. (Most of us probably remember what an LP was "back in the days..." Gramps talking here  ;D )

Cygnus X-1, Book II: Hemispheres - Rush
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=7uXCfDRddC0

[I. Prelude]

When our weary world was young
The struggle of the ancients first began
The gods of love and reason
Sought alone to rule the fate of man

They battled through the ages
But still neither force would yield
The people were divided
Every soul a battlefield

[II. Apollo / Dionysus]

[Apollo: Bringer Of Wisdom]
I bring truth and understanding
I bring wit and wisdom fair
Precious gifts beyond compare
We can build a world of wonder
I can make you all aware
I will find you food and shelter
Show you fire to keep you warm
Through the endless winter storm
You can live in grace and comfort
In the world that you transform'

The people were delighted
Coming forth to claim their prize
They ran to build their cities
And converse among the wise
But one day the streets fell silent
Yet they knew not what was wrong
The urge to build these fine things
Seemed not to be so strong
The wise men were consulted
And the Bridge of Death was crossed
In quest of Dionysus
To find out what they had lost

[Dionysus: Bringer Of Love]
I bring love to give you solace
In the darkness of the night
In the Heart's eternal light
You need only trust your feelings
Only love can steer you right
I bring laughter, I bring music
I bring joy and I bring tears
I will soothe your primal fears
Throw off those chains of reason
And your prison disappears'

The cities were abandoned
And the forests echoed song
They danced and lived as brothers
They knew love could not be wrong
Food and wine they had aplenty
And they slept beneath the stars
The people were contented
And the gods watched from afar
But the winter fell upon them
And it caught them unprepared
Bringing wolves and cold starvation
And the hearts of men despaired

[III. Armageddon: The Battle Of Heart and Mind]

The universe divided
As the heart and mind collided
With the people left unguided
For so many troubled years
In a cloud of doubts and fears
Their world was torn asunder into hollow
Hemispheres

Some fought themselves, some fought each other
Most just followed one another
Lost and aimless like their brothers
For their hearts were so unclear
And the truth could not appear
Their spirits were divided into blinded
Hemispheres

Some who did not fight
Brought tales of old to light
'My Rocinante sailed by night
On her final flight'
To the heart of Cygnus' fearsome force
We set our course
Spiralled through that timeless space
To this immortal place

[IV. Cygnus: Bringer Of Balance]

I have memory and awareness
But I have no shape or form
As a disembodied spirit
I am dead and yet unborn
I have passed into Olympus
As was told in tales of old
To the city of Immortals
Marble white and purest gold...

I see the gods in battle rage on high...
Thunderbolts across the sky...
I cannot move, I cannot hide...
I feel a silent scream begin inside...

Then all at once the chaos ceased
A stillness fell, a sudden peace
The warriors felt my silent cry
And stayed their struggle, mystified

Apollo was atonished
Dionysus thought me mad
But they heard my story further
And they wondered, and were sad

Looking down from Olympus
On a world of doubt and fear
Its surface splintered
Into sorry Hemispheres

They sat a while in silence
Then they turned at last to me
'We will call you Cygnus
The god of Balance you shall be'

[V. The Sphere: A Kind Of Dream]

We can walk our road together
If our goals are all the same
We can run alone and free
If we pursue a different aim
Let the truth of love be lighted
Let the love of truth shine clear
Sensibility
Armed with sense and liberty
With the heart and mind united in a single
Perfect
Sphere

Precious memory: I listened to this song on the top of Mount Olympus, 30 odd years ago.  ;D

"If there's one thing, I should do, despite my greatest fears, is to sing this song to my Inner Child." (Inner Teen/Inner Adolescent/Inner Adult/Inner Man and/or my Inner Ally. Whoever needs to be heard, seen and spoken with)

Happy New Year y'all!  :fireworks:

"Next Year, Baby" - Jamie Cullum
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=xsQUxlULI4U

Next Year,
Things are gonna change,
Gonna drink less beer
And start all over again
Gonna read more books
Gonna keep up with the news
Gonna learn how to cook
And spend less money on shoes
Pay my bills on time
File my mail away
everyday
Only drink the finest wine
And call my Gran every Sunday
Resolutions
Well Baby they come and go
Will I do any of these things?
The answers probably "No"
But if there's one thing, I must do,
Despite my greatest fears
I'm gonna say to you
How I've felt all of these years

Next Year

I gonna tell you
how I feel
I gonna tell you
how I feel

Well, resolutions
Baby they come and go
Will I do any of these things?
The answers probably "No"
But if there's one thing, I must do,
Despite my greatest fears
I'm gonna say to you
How I've felt all of these years

Next Year

This thread has become my own personal playground, so I'll lock it at the end of the month.

I do so by posting this video: a beautiful song from a beautiful movie a saw last year.
The movie is about an adolescent girl/young woman, growing up in a family of deaf parents and a deaf sibling. The others are not mute, but 'speaking' among them is done via sign-language.
She translates: she is the voice of the family where family matters are concerned to the 'outside' world.

She herself is quite vocal, as the vid will let you hear, when she applies for the (french) National Academy of Music, on instigation of her music teacher at secondary school. (seen as playing the piano)
The other guy you'll see is her boyfriend. He was quite a wonderful singer as well, until his hormones kicked in, and he lost it during his "voice break" in puberty. And thus lost his opportunity to apply.

I searched for a video with English subtitles, but I couldn't find it. So I'll leave you with one with German subtitles.
And the original French lyrics, sung.
And the sign-language, seen. As she conveys her song to her parents.

With me and you here, we have a five-layered language cake.

The song is about 'flying out of the nest'. "Je vole" = "I fly"
It has touched me deeply, as did the whole movie, for whatever language/communication problem existed: the parents know. And let go, yet still feel bonded.
(I guess. It's pretty much fiction as far as my experience is anything to go by.)

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=9keP-TJ9Rrk
(excuse me for the German 'dubbing' at the end)

The movie is "La Famille Béliers". I highly recommend it.

"How Do You Run?" by Rae Spoon is one of my all time favorite songs. It's about all the ways kids manage to survive when they're in tough situations at home. (Next sentence makes sense after hearing the song.) And as someone who literally did change their name as a way to forge my own identity, this song has special significance for me :) When you open the link, it's the second song from the top on the right hand side.

I found a song the other day i hadnt heard in years,  but the words hit home.

Look What You've Done
By Jet

Take my photo off the wall, if it just wont sing for you
Cause all thats left is gone away, and theres nothing left for you to prove.

Oh look what youve done, youve made a fool of everyone.
Oh seems like such fun until youve lost what you had won.

Give me back my point of view, cause i just cant think for you.
I can hardly hear you say "oh what shall i do", well you choose.

Oh look what youve done youve made a fool of everyone, oh seems like such fununtil youve lost what you have won

Take my photo off the wall, if it just wont sing for you.
Cause all thats left is gone away, and theres nothing left for you to do

Oh look what youve done youve made a fool of everyone.
Oh seems like such fun until youve lost what you have won

Farewell for now David Bowie.  :'(

So many great songs, it's hard to pick one.
"Wild is the wind" was the first one that came to mind to post on this site, but since it's not a song by Bowie himself, I picked this one.
The YouTube vid is a nice tribute to his career as well.

Sound & Vision - David Bowie
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=fRc2_-BCljQ

Ooh ooh
Ooh ooh
Doo doo doo doo doo doo
Doo doo doo doo doo doo doo

Don't you wonder sometimes
'Bout sound and vision

Blue, blue, electric blue
That's the color of my room where I will live
(Mmm mmm mmm mmm)
Blue, blue

Pale blinds, drawn all day
Nothing to do, nothing to say
(Mmm mmm mmm mmm)
Blue, blue

I will sit right down
Waiting for the gift of sound and vision
And I will sing
Waiting for the gift of sound and vision

Drifting into my solitude, over my head

Don't you wonder sometimes
'Bout sound and vision

Something else I remember about David Bowie, when I was like 6 or 7 he hosted a showing of the animated film "The Snowman", during intermission he spoke of how he adored the theme song "Walking In The Air"  he then sang his own version of it, it was awesome. I had heard of him before that, but that really made me a fan. He truly was a master.
